Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape is becoming more varied. Visitors can experience art, Emirati heritage, science and natural history within the emirate, with Saadiyat Cultural District bringing many of these experiences together in one place.
The development of Saadiyat Island reflects a broader approach to culture in Abu Dhabi. Rather than focusing on one type of museum or attraction, the island brings together institutions that explore different subjects and different ways of learning.
For us at Miral, Saadiyat’s evolving cultural offering is closely connected to our work with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT). Together, we have worked on projects including teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, both of which add new ways for residents and visitors to experience culture, art and science in the emirate.

A Cultural District Built Around Different Experiences
Saadiyat Cultural District already brings together several major cultural institutions. Louvre Abu Dhabi explores connections between cultures through art, while Zayed National Museum tells the story of the UAE. The district is also home to Manarat Al Saadiyat and the Abrahamic Family House, among other cultural destinations.
The opening of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi in April 2025, followed by Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi later that year, further broadened what visitors can experience within the district.
This means a visit to Saadiyat can move from art and history to science and the natural world, without these experiences feeling disconnected from Abu Dhabi’s wider cultural story.
Experiencing Art Through Technology
Spanning 17,000 square metres, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi brings together art, technology and the surrounding environment. Its artworks are not static. They evolve in response to their surroundings and the people experiencing them.
The experience adds a more interactive form of art to Saadiyat Cultural District, complementing the museums and cultural institutions around it. Developed in collaboration between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Miral and Tokyo-based art collective teamLab, the project was designed specifically for Abu Dhabi.
For us, the project is part of a wider effort to support experiences that give people different ways to engage with Abu Dhabi. At teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, that means moving beyond simply viewing art and giving visitors the opportunity to become part of the experience itself.
Bringing Natural History Into the Cultural Story
Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi expands Saadiyat Cultural District beyond art and heritage into science and the natural world. Covering more than 35,000 square metres, the museum takes visitors through 13.8 billion years of natural history, from the origins of the universe to the evolution of life on Earth.
What gives the experience a distinct connection to Abu Dhabi is its Arabian perspective. Alongside the wider story of our planet, the museum explores the fauna, flora and geological history of the region. Its collection also includes significant specimens such as ‘Stan’, a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex.
Working alongside the DCT Abu Dhabi, we helped develop Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi as a place for discovery, education and scientific research. Its addition to Saadiyat Cultural District broadens the cultural experience beyond art and heritage, giving visitors another way to explore and understand the natural world.
Expanding What a Cultural Visit to Abu Dhabi Can Include
Saadiyat’s growth is giving residents and international visitors more ways to engage with culture in Abu Dhabi.
A cultural day no longer needs to focus only on paintings, objects or historical displays. It can include interactive art, the story of the UAE, scientific discovery and billions of years of natural history.
That variety is important to how Abu Dhabi’s visitor experience is developing. Through our destination management work on Saadiyat and our involvement in projects such as teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, we are supporting a cultural destination that brings different forms of knowledge, creativity and discovery closer together.
