Yas Island Breakthrough Challenge in collaboration with Zayed University

Objective

Engage with the UAE community and give the youth of Abu Dhabi an opportunity to participate in shaping the future of Yas Island - Abu Dhabi’s leisure and entertainment destination for visitors and residents.

Initiative

In 2016, Miral launched the first of its kind collaboration with Zayed University called the Yas Island Breakthrough Challenge. The semester long competition brought students together to brainstorm and develop innovative ideas to strengthen Yas Island’s position as a global leisure and entertainment destination with experiences unique to the region.

Result

The competition saw participation from 33 teams and over 150 Emirati students. The teams presented their proposals to the judging panel and pitched ideas for a chance to win the competition. The judging panel evaluated the projects for creativity, feasibility, and the potential value it adds to Yas Island. The “Yas Market” project, compromising of an all-female team, was announced the winner of the inaugural Challenge. The winning proposal is now being evaluated for real-world implementation by the leadership team at Miral.

Additional details on Yas Market

Yas Market would be a destination for special events, as well as for Emirati and youth run businesses, and restaurants, all created to showcase traditional market themes which express the UAE’s culture and heritage. To add to the appeal, the Zayed University team recommended incorporating much loved cartoon characters like Shaabiat Al Cartoon, Shahfan, Hamdoon, Majed, Mansoor, and Khosa Bossa which many Emiratis have grown up to.
